Staff

We are pleased to present folks that comprise the staff of 1490 WSTP. Their various backgrounds and dedication make us one of the best News/Talk radio stations anywhere.

That familiar voice on Salisbury’s Early Morning News has been a part of the Rowan County airwaves for over 30 years.  First joining WSTP in 1977 as a news anchor, Kent Bernhardt remained with the station until December of 2000, when he left to join the Performance Racing Network at Lowes Motor Speedway. Still the Production Coordinator for PRN, Bernhardt returned to WSTP in July to reunite with his old friend Howard Platt on WSTP’s morning show.  “I’d been itching for some time to do some local radio again, so when WSTP called and asked about the possibility of doing some limited work with the station, I jumped. ”What he likes to call his “Johnny Carson Schedule” may take him away from the WSTP mike from time to time, but for the most part, he’ll be in the chair far more than he’s out. Plus, he’ll be doing what he loves most…connecting with the local community in a personal way. “I’m 53 now, and that gives me an excuse to be old and crotchety on the air.”, Bernhardt jokes.  “Age makes you more opinionated, and takes away your shyness and reserve, so it should be interesting.  I’ll probably choke on my foot two or three times a morning.” When he’s not behind a mike, Bernhardt enjoys theater, photography, movies, and a newfound passion; writing.  He authors a humorous blog of his memories growing up in Faith, NC called “Ye of Little Faith” at http://faithnc-kent.blogspot.com.  He’s the proud father of a daughter, McKenna.

Confirmed bachelor, sports maniac, and not-so-reformed hippie. Howard is the long time voice of Legion baseball, a fan of the Redskins (like you didn't already know that), the Tarheels, and the Atlanta Braves. Howard enjoys the life he leads-a steady diet of sports, food, wrestling (no, it's not a sport), movies, food, sports, and gazing upon the fairer sex-and sports, also. Oh, ask him how he feels about soccer

Mike is a Top 40 DJ from way back, working markets like: New York, Boston, New Orleans, to name a few. Years and years in the industry have have given him the edge of knowing what's news worthy, what sounds, good, and how to be a class act on the air. Being the best on the air means striving to be the best. Simply put...his influence makes WSTP the best News Talk radio station on the air...here or anywhere else!

If you've ever called during main business hours, you've probably talked to MJ. She handles the phones, billing, Notaries, affidavits, and just about anything else that needs to be done in the main office.
